Because we had so much fun last year we decided to go again. Festivities started on Saturday and will run for another 2 weeks. More activities will be posted as we attend them. On Saturday we hit the carnival rides, crab races, and did a little shopping.
In all the state fairs and carnivals we have attended, this year we had a new experience... snow. As you can see, it was really coming down. We dressed pretty warm and the kids had a blast. Unfortunately nearly all our tickets fell out of Jon's pocket (some kid must be in heaven) so we weren't able to play nearly as much as we wanted to.
After that we headed to the "Crab Races". Not knowing what to expect, we headed to Phyllis' Seafood Cafe. For $2 you could "rent" a crab to race. Reagan picked crab #10 and named it Lilian. Gavin picked #8 (a huge monster of a crab) and named his Red Racer. Basically they pile all the hermit crabs under a cake dome set on a large wooden table. Painted around the outside of the table is a yellow circle. The first crab to get its entire body outside the yellow circle wins. Oh, and they spray the crabs with water to irritate them enough to get moving. Reagan's crab was far more fiery than Gavin's was (his could have died and we never would have known). Neither one turned out to be a winner. Well, there is always next year.
After that we did a little shopping. Reagan bought some styl'n shades which you can see in the pics when we headed back to the rides for round 2. It was fun to see the kids enjoy themselves and look at all the vendors. If you want a fur coat or hat this is the place to go. They don't call it the "Fur Rondy" for nothing. All in all, it was a long but enjoyable day. Hopefully we can get back out this weekend and see the mushers for the Iditarod.

That looks fun! It's amazing that they can run those rides in the snow like that.
